Joe Maddison’s War (UK / 2010 / 110 mins)

A World War Two drama set on Tyneside and starring Kevin Whately, Robson Green, Derek Jacobi and Melanie Hill, it was the last screenplay by the late, great, Alan Plater (Z Cars, Beiderbecke Affair, A Very British Coup). Produced by Howard Ella, it was a Mammoth Screen Production.

Joe Maddison gained an astonishing 6.2m viewers and was warmly received by the critics. This is what they said;

“This was a perfect and perfectly simple drama of a shipyard worker on Tyneside whose wife leaves him for a naval officer.” Financial Times

“It certainly had the best of Plater in it, from his dry humane wit to his willingness to take a swerve into deep emotion.” The Independent

“A poignant and witty tale of self discovery.” The Daily Telegraph

“Decency in drama is dead. Alan Plater snuck in with Joe Maddison's War just as the curtains closed and life became dark.” Radio Times
